As Alexander turned away from Frank’s tombstone, he noticed a black limousine pull up. He scratched his head and wondered why it was there. Slowly, he made his way forward as the car came to a steady halt. Curious, he stopped as well. He knocked on the window, and nobody answered. He knocked again, and it opened.
He was dragged into the car unexpectedly and about hit the floor of the vehicle. Pulling himself up from the carpet, he looked at the men across from him. He squinted his eyebrows as he was trying to get excess water relieved from his eyes. After a few moments of refocusing himself, he was able to see who the men were. Surprised, he leaned forward and hugged them both.
They were Frank’s two eldest sons. He thought they were away on business in Italy. Rumor had it that the two were in cahoots with a mob war that broke out, and none of them were heard from since. He came to realize that was not the truth. The truth was that they went into hiding after the Don had bit the bullet.
Business in the city had become scarce. John and Morius were looking for jobs; any kind of racketeering business they could get a handle on. But when the police took the whole city over, people were afraid. They hid in their homes, and left the businesses, such as drugs, and illegal poker games alone for fear of being caught. The day of the corrupt police officer was over.
Everyone had been in hiding ever since then. The economic downfall didn’t assist in matters much either. It was a shameful thing; the mob business, and now even Alexander’s own business was about to be in turmoil. The whole world he knew as about to be turned upside down.
As Alexander studied the two men’s faces, he saw that they were grave looking and older then they once had been. Once about ten years ago, they rescued him from a small boarding school. His mother nor father ever took any care of him. He was laid up in the school for the summer and never had any real friends. This was the life he lived.
“Where the hell have you two been?” Alexander asked in a demanding voice. He knew they were up to something. He also knew the mob wars weren’t true. The families in the states and beyond have been in peace talks for ages now and it would seem unlikely that any of them would break out.
“Don’t take that tone of voice with me Hayes,” Morius said. He was the eldest of the two. Morius spoke in a way that demanded anyone’s attention with ease. Morius, being the more outspoken of the two took it upon himself to engage Hayes’s question. While to him, it didn’t seem too demanding, Hayes thought otherwise.
“What the hell man? You’ve been gone for six months and now show up out of the blue scaring me half to death just so you can tell me ‘not to take that tone of voice with you?’ What kind of a question is that?”
“Listen, John and I are here solely on business. Got it? You know how we work. The fact of the matter is Hayes, you’re in trouble deep. You need the cash to keep your business from sinking. We did the numbers and you’re only three million dollars in the whole. Another flop in this quarter and you’ll plummet big time,” Morius said with a calmer and more even tone.
Hayes listened with terror. He knew that Sin Casino was in trouble, but he didn’t think it was that bad. He wondered why his general manager hadn’t reported to him the fourth quarter results, and now he knew why. The big brown eyes of Alexander just stared at them in disbelief.
“What do you mean by plummet. How can anyone sink lower then three million dollars? Is it really that bad? Wait, I don’t want to know,” he changed his mind quickly. Just as he opened his mouth, Morius shook his head. This made Alex even more irate then he was before.
“You fail to realize Alex, that without our help, there is nothing that you can do. Your marketing team has bailed and every payroll check that was delivered….bounced. It’s looking gruesome. I give it another year before you lose all contol of your business.”
John looked at Morius and then looked at Alexander, the silent one was being more of an enforcer in case Alex got out of control. That was John’s only role in this very discussion. Alex was wondering when and if he got out of control what would happen. He did know deep down how these discussions usually ended up. That was the sad reality of it, and the worst encounters anyone would have with the mob.
“So, what do you propose?” Alex asked wearily.
“I propose that you hand over half of your business to the Horschano family. From there, we’ll rebuild it, and turn it into the profitable conglomerate that it once had been. We’ll take care of all the payroll division. You take care of everything else. We just get half the profits,” Morius went on to tell Alexander of all they had planned.
One issue Alex had was the fact the Horschano family was huge into the gaming industry. He knew with them backing him up that he would be in a great position to be back in power in Battle Creek again. However, it could be a big mistake. Things do end up all twisted in the end. He trusted them, but yet, he just wasn’t sure. It would be the biggest decision of his career.
“Tell you what,” Morius said, “We’ll give you twenty-four hours for your decision. By then, we should have everything in place for what we need to assist you in your woes. This is the only choice you have. Either, you give us a definite answer, or you’re dead. Either way, it’s going to be the hard way. You know it to be true Alex. You’ve seen us do this before. Just remember, it’s only business.”
Alex gulped. He knew the answer already, but before he could open his mouth, John opened the door of the limousine that led into the street. Cautiously, Alexander got out of the car and started walking away. Looking behind him, he noticed they were still there. Shrugging his shoulder, he slowly walked to his apartment. It was going to be a long night.
